Abstract
Subtitles for people that are d/Deaf or hard of hearing (SDH) are created on the basis of polysemiotic texts, i.e. films or TV programmes. Polysemiotic texts can be defined as artefacts that generate meaning through both verbal signs and nonverbal or paraverbal signs. In the case of audiovisual material, which is the source text for subtitles, another distinction can be made: Verbal, nonverbal and paraverbal signs are conveyed either visually or auditorily, as shown in the following model (Fig. 4).
